Jared M. Spool, Founding Principal of User Interface Engineering, a leading research company specializing in usability and web design issues, gave the keynote address on "Why Good Content Must Suck: Designing for the Scent of Information." Jared discussed how to organize a site to pull users to the right place. He talked about his recent research on how people find information on large web sites and how users follow a scent. He also showed how design can block the visitor's "smell," preventing them from finding what they want. Slides (PDF)
  Breakout Sessions
  • Developing Intranets (Bill Miller) -- Without careful attention to the basic principles of design and development, corporate intranets can quickly become an underutilized and disorganized collection of ill-conceived, inconsistent and tacky pages. This session explains how to create high-value intranets that can help corporate employees improve their efficiency and effectiveness. Outline (PDF), Handouts (PDF), Slides (PPT)

  • XML - The Solution To Bridging Software Divides? (Mark Volkmann) -- XML, while a fairly new technology, is already delivering many benefits to software developers. Current uses are for providing a portable data format and separating data gathering tasks from data presentation. The biggest benefit of XML may be in what lies just ahead... Web services. This talk will focus on the use of XML to allow software to communicate across hardware, programming language and distributed architecture divides, using SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI. Come and learn about the pros and cons of these technologies so you can decide for yourself whether web services should play a role in your software development efforts. Outline (PDF), Handouts (PDF),

  • Technical Aspects of Usability (Jeff Lash) -- How "non-usability" people can improve the user experience through scripting techniques, server settings, etc. This session explores the intersection of scripting/programming/admin and user experience. Outline (PDF), Handouts (PDF), Slides (PPT)

  • Tools for Managing a Web Site (Lee Lammert) -- Active (log file analysis, file rotation, cleanup), Development (FTP, Secure FTP, Shells, SSH, Validators, Troubleshooting), and Diagnostic (DNS tools, TCP/IP tools, nslookup, dig, whois, top, ps) Web Server Management Tools and utilities will be discussed in this interactive session. Outline (PDF), Slides (PPT)

  • Hands-On Rapid Interface Design (Joe Grant) -- This two-part session introduces the practice of quickly generating a user interface design, getting feedback, changing it, getting more feedback, etc. Participants will work in groups of 3-5 people. Though not required, those who opt for this topic will get the most out of it if they select it for both breakout periods. Note: Part I is only offered during the first session and Part II is only offered during the second session. Outline (PDF), Handouts (PDF), Slides (PPT)
