Description:

Speaker Dave Blankenship will give a presentation on Microsoft Office Live Essentials. Dave uses MS Office Live Essentials for building his own website. Most of his presentation time will be a demonstraation of the live development capabilities of MS Office Live; he will also spend time discussing the non-web development elements of MS Office Live.

Dave has been in the technology industry for 24 years, he was a programmer/analyst for 17 years at various large corporations. He recently opened an office in Affton, MO for his business, Information Agent.

Description: Kyle has over 10 years' experience in the web world stemming from his eCommerce adventures during the Internet boom. He joined Adobe in July 2005 as a Systems Engineer and actively travels around the country promoting Adobe's web tools such as Flash, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Contribute. Kyle is a certified Dreamweaver Developer and Flash Designer. Description: Scott Granneman will be telling us all about podcasting, to coincide with his soon-to-be published book, "Podcasting with Audacity." He'll cover podcasting, as well as blogs, hosting, marketing, and so on. Audacity is the leading software program for creating podcasts. Hundreds of thousands of amateurs and professionals alike have created podcasts using Audacity. In this presentation, Scott will go over the basics: how to install Audacity, plug in your microphone, record your first podcast, and get it online as quickly as possible. In addition, he'll address podcasting-specific topics, such as adding background music and conducting interviews. Even if you don't use Audacity for your podcasts, you'll still learn a lot of helpful information. If you do use Audacity, you'll learn some things you didn't know!

Topic: Cleaning Up Web Apps with AJAX

Description:

The presentation will cover a short history of AJAX development (who invented the technology, timeline, etc.), identify what types of problems does this technology solve, and then cover one or more examples of using AJAX (complete with source code) in real application. The examples will demonstrate using AJAX to display updates to a log file as the logging occurs in a web application.

David's presentation will be a combination of PowerPoint presentation and demo, using Rational Software Architect (integrated development environment).

ASP Odyssey: One man's odyssey as he tries to navigate through setup and deployment of his organization's information filled website.

Alan Barasch has been in the process of converting a website that was originally 3200 static pages (created from his Excel macros) to ASP and SQL Server for 6 months. The first draft is online at http://missouri.mophi.org. He would like our help in building the DataGrid and web.config.

Alan Barasch has been involved with the St. Louis Web Developers organization and its predecesor since before 1995. At present, he is an unemployed Excel developer who also happens to know a thing or two about web development. He is a director and vice-president of STLWebDev.

Description: As the market for top talent becomes tighter, recruiters are turning to online communities to connect with top candidates and build passive talent pools. Jim Durbin discusses the how web-savvy job-seekers are using blogs to get noticed by headhunters, and explains how to use a corporate or third party recruiting blog to bring more qualified candidates to your recruiters.

Jim Durbin is the Director, Corporate Communications for the Durbin Media Group in St. Louis, MO. He joined the recruiting world in 1999 at the peak of the internet bubble in Los Angeles, and has since made the transition from recruiting blogger to blogging consultant.

Mr. Durbin is interested in using the blogging format to improve communication between employers and job-seekers. He is the primary author for http://www.StlRecruiting.com, and a contributing author for the http://www.Recruiting.com group blog.

Description: Our speaker for this month will be Chris Hayes speaking on "Building an MP3 Player with Flash and XML". Chris will take us through the procedure of building a Flash application using XML as the data source. Incorporating XML as a data source can be used with many applications and programs used for web development. Chrisr Hayes is the Senior E-learning and Web Designer at SSE. In addition, he teaches multimedia and design classes at Washington University and is the manager of the St. Louis Adobe User Group (formerly St. Louis Macromedia User Group).

Our speaker for this month's meeting is Mark Murdock from Lantern Global Information Security, speaking on Penetration Testing - Mark will be discussing Lanern's techniques, tools and examples about penetration testing and share ideas how to better secure your projects.

One area of Lantern Global Information Security's focus is to challenge the technical and physical environments of an organization in order to identify exploitable vulnerabilities that pose a significant risk. Lantern Red Teams perform an objective-based simulation of an adversarial attack in an effort to improve upon security posture by exposing and exploiting vulnerabilities and weaknesses in particular systems. Role-based Penetration Testing allows an organization to set the scenario for an engagement.

As Alan will tell you, Cascading Style Sheets are one of the easiest ways for a webmaster to affect the look and feel of a website. With CSS, colors and layouts can be changed in an instant across one page or the complete site. Styles can easily be established for web presentation, printing, special needs, and voice. Styles can be made to handle any type of browser that are thrown at them.

The program originally scheduled for August, "Spatially Aware Maps", will be presented at a later date.

Ken Botnick has been making books for almost 25 years. He was co-proprietor, with Steve Miller, of Red Ozier Press in New York in the late 1970s and 80s. For the last 15 years he has printed under his own imprint. In addition to working at the press, Ken was responsible for design and production of art books at Yale University Press and served as Executive Director of the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. Ken is currently an Associate Professor at Washington University in St. Louis, teaching design and other courses in the Visual Communications department and serving as the Director of the Kranzberg Book Studio.
